An Optical Mixer and RGB Control for Fine Images using Grey Scale Distribution

Abstract: We considered the issue of color mixing from the viewpoint of gray scale images and investigated the effect of the mixed light. The goal of this study was to improve the quality of the grey scale images by using mixed RGB illumination. The mixing mechanism and image quality were formulized and applied to a machine vision system with an RGB mixer. The RGB mixer was made of RGB LEDs, a power AMP, a mixing chamber, and a bundle of optical fibers. The intensity of the RGB light was adjusted by varying the 12 bit D… Show more

“…Vriesenga reported the vision inspection for plats using color illumination, color filters and image mixing, but did not show analytic equation of optimal illumination. [11] We also proposed a histogrambased approach for optimal illumination by mixing using RGB LEDs, but it was time-consuming [12]. Multi-spectral approaches were presented by Lee for a multi-light endoscope and Chi for a multi-flash system.…”

“…Hence, the light color is important in the manufacturing process, but the color selection is mostly limited at the hardware level of a light source. A mixed light source can generate various colors by combining RGB LEDs, and it is constructed by using an optical mixer such as a collimator [4] , micro-lens array [5] , shell mixer [6] , diffuser [7] , or bundle of optical fibers [8] . Although such a mixed light source can generate various colors, the spectral ranges of high-power LEDs are constant.…”

[8] Although such a mixed light source can generate various colors, the spectral ranges of highpower LEDs are constant. Therefore, auxiliary color LEDs are applied to a mixed light source when spectral-range flexibility is required.…”
