An Organic Solvent-Free Method for the Extraction of Ellagic Acid Compounds from Raspberry Wine Pomace with Assistance of Sodium Bicarbonate

Abstract: Industrial processing of raspberry juice and wine generates considerable byproducts of raspberry pomace. Ellagic acids/ellagitannins, being characterized by their antioxidant and antiproliferation properties, constitute the majority of polyphenolics in the pomace and are valuable for recovery. In the present study, we developed a novel procedure with sodium bicarbonate assisted extraction (SBAE) to recover ellagic acid from raspberry wine pomace. Key parameters in the procedure, i.e., sodium bicarbonate concen… Show more

“…Secondly, NaHCO 3 can interact with the phenolic hydroxyl group of silybin, which improves the hydrolysis and solubility of silybin [ 8 ]. Thirdly, NaHCO 3 can interact with the fatty acids in the milk thistle seeds through saponification, which facilitates the release of silybin from the hydrophobic components [ 19 , 20 ]. Fourthly, NaHCO 3 can improve the disruption of plant cell walls, which is conducive to the dissolution and release of silybin and protein.…”

“…Ellagic acid (EA), a kind of tannin that belongs to the natural polyphenol compound, could be recovered from various fruits and nuts processing waste for valorization, including pomegranate peel [ 17 ], raspberry wine pomace [ 18 ], chestnut shells [ 19 ], and longan seeds [ 20 ]. It has pronounced pharmacological properties such as antioxidant [ 21 ], anticancer [ 22 ], anti-inflammatory [ 23 ], and anti-atherosclerosis activity [ 24 ], and treatment for diabetes [ 25 ] and neurodegenerative diseases [ 26 ].…”
