An Outbreak of Measles in a University in Korea, 2014

Abstract: Measles has been declared eliminated from the Korea since 2006. In April 2014, a measles outbreak occurred at a University in Seoul. A total of 85 measles cases were identified. In order to estimate vaccine effectiveness of measles vaccine, we reviewed the vaccination records of the university students. The vaccine effectiveness of two doses of measles containing vaccine was 60.0% (95% CI, 38.2–74.1; P < 0.05). Transmission was interrupted after the introduction of outbreak-response immunization. The outbreak … Show more

“…As a result, South Korea has maintained a highly immunized adult population. Despite such measures, however, small local outbreaks of measles continued to occur in South Korea [1], and there have been some reports of pockets of under-immunity among the young adult population [23]. We previously reported the low seropositive rate from 1994 to 1985 birth cohort in new healthcare workers (HCWs) (n = 1,130) [4].…”

“…The trend in the incidence of AFR showed a low prevalence rate from 2009 to 2015 followed by a surge in the number of cases, corresponding to measles outbreaks not only in Mongolia but also in neighboring countries and others (China and South Korea) in 2015–2016 [9, 10]. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that, despite the presence of a safe, effective and affordable vaccine that can prevent the disease for more than 40 years, remains a dominant cause of childhood death in many countries [11].…”

“…Measles has re-emerged in recent times and its local epidemic outbreaks have frequently occurred worldwide [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Unlike measles in the past, the measles outbreaks that occurred recently in adults have developed in persons who had been properly vaccinated during their adolescence [ 5 , 6 ].…”

“…Unlike measles in the past, the measles outbreaks that occurred recently in adults have developed in persons who had been properly vaccinated during their adolescence [ 5 , 6 ]. In South Korea, measles tends to recur mainly in children younger than 2 years of age and women in the age group 2–39 years [ 4 , 7 ]. This finding is supported by recently published data, which revealed a low rate of seropositivity for the measles antibody if the individuals tested were born after 1994 [ 8 ].…”
