An Over View of Canine Dermatophytosis

Abstract: Dermatophytosis is a superficial infection of the keratinized layers of the skin and its appendages (hair, feathers, horns) and is caused by keratinophilic and keratinolytic genera such as Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton. In dogs, nearly 70% of cases are caused by Microsporum canis, 20% by M. gypseum, and 10% by Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The Wood’s lamp test is of diagnostic importance for the establishment of a tentative diagnosis of dermatophytosis in dogs. This overview will forecast more li… Show more

“…The recovery status of both treatment groups is clearly illustrated in Figure 2. These results indicate that HOCl may also be an effective agent, similar to the results of different anti-mycotic trials on dermatophytosis (Ertaş et al, 2015;Odorcic et al, 2015;Wisal, 2018;Choi et al, 2019;Endo et al, 2020;Indarjulianto et al, 2020;Romanowski et al, 2020;Brescini et al, 2021).…”

“…Micosporum (especially M. canis), Trichophyton and Epidermophyton spp. are the main agents of the disease (Yapicier et al, 2017;Wisal, 2018;Hanedan et al, 2021). Dermatophytosis is also called by different names such as fungus, ringworm, trichopytosis, Candidia and Yeast, depending on its localization on the organism, host type or similar condition (Şimay, 2014).…”

“…Identification is carried out by microscopic and macroscopic observations, a skin swab is taken from the skin of an infected dog using the Mackenzie method, a sterile toothbrush is gently rubbed from the dog's skin onto Saboraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) media (Abdalla&Wisal, 2018) [17] , SDA is mixed with gentamicin to prevent bacterial growth. After 3-5 days of incubation of the media at 25-27 °C, the media will be examined based on the morphological characteristics of the colony: mycelial aspect (cotton or thin), border shape (regular or irregular), colony coloration (black, moss green, or gray), the back side of the colony (with or without dark pigmentation), and the absence or presence of conidia (Santos et al 2018) [18] .…”
