An Overview of Cognitive Remediation Therapy for People with Severe Mental Illness

Abstract: Cognitive remediation refers to nonpharmacological methods of improving cognitive function in people with severe mental disorders. Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) can be delivered via computerised programs, of varying length and complexity, or can be undertaken one-on-one by a trained clinician. There has been a considerable interest in cognitive remediation, driven by recognition that cognitive deficits are a major determinant of outcome in people with severe, chronic mental illnesses. CRT has been shown … Show more

“…Consumers with markedly impaired processing speed may be best suited to Housing First approaches that provide long-term, community-based supports. Cognitive remediation-shown to improve response to vocational training among persons with SMI [56][57][58] -may have a role in homeless programs.…”

“…From meta-analyses and reviews, there are wide variations in the effect size of computer-assisted cognitive remediation on cognitive functioning domains. The effect sizes reported could range from low to medium ( d = 0.25 to 0.65) for different cognitive domains ( Barlati et al, 2013 ; Galletly and Rigby, 2013 ; Garrido et al, 2013 ; Genevsky et al, 2010 ; Wykes et al, 2011 ). The repeated-measures design used in this study had two groups (an experimental group and a control group), and there were two repeated measures over time.…”

“…Cognitive Rehabilitation is a complex collection of technique that is designed to enhance perception, attention, comprehension, learning, remembering, problem solving and reasoning in individuals who are impaired in these areas. [ 1 2 3 4 ] Cognitive rehabilitation therapy is the art and science of restoring these mental processes and teaching compensatory strategies. While it is established that depression increases the risk of cognitive impairment, recent evidence suggests that cognitive dysfunction during remission increases the individuals’ vulnerability to onset, maintenance and recurrence of depression.…”
