The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has brought a global socio-economic crisis to almost all sectors including the fishery. To limit the infection, governments adopted several containment measures. In Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia, a lockdown period was imposed from March to May 2020, during which many activities, including restaurants had to close or limit their business. All of this caused a strong reduction in seafood requests and consequently, a decrease in fishing activities. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 in the Northern and Central Adriatic fleet, by comparing the fishing activities in three periods (before, during, and after the lockdown) of 2019 and 2020. The use of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) data allowed us to highlight the redistribution of the fishing grounds of the trawlers, mainly located near the coasts during the 2020 lockdown period, as well as a reduction of about 50% of fishing effort. This reduction resulted higher for the Chioggia trawlers (−80%) and, in terms of fishing effort decrease, the large bottom otter trawl was the fishing segment mainly affected by the COVID-19 event. Moreover, by analysing the landings of the Chioggia fleet and the Venice lagoon fleets, it was possible to point out a strong reduction both in landings and profits ranging from −30%, for the small-scale fishery operating at sea, to −85%, for the small bottom otter trawl.

The knowledge of morphological relationships and particularly of those concerning fish body girth (G) with total length (TL) is necessary in gear selectivity and specifically the technical measures to avoid capture of undersized individuals. This study concerns 24 marine species exploited by the small-scale coastal fleet in the Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean Sea), for 6 of which, the TL-G relationships are mentioned for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea and the adjacent seas. Samples were collected seasonally, from April 2016 to February 2017. The coefficients of the linear regression of body girth in three body positions, (Geye, posterior to the eye; Ghead at the posterior end of the operculum; Gmax at the maximum body depth), with the total length were estimated for each species and for the groups formatted when Geye, Ghead and Gmax were plotted against total length for all the species combined. Statistically significant differences among the three groups were detected (ANCOVA, P<0.001). Comparison of the total length-body girth relationships for 18 species previously studied in different geographic areas of the Mediterranean and the adjacent seas, showed differences mainly with the results from Portuguese waters for certain species populations. Based on the resulted equations, the maximum girth (G max) corresponding to the Minimum Conservation Reference Size (MCRS) and to the total length at maturity (L m) were calculated for each species. Identified mesh sizes respective to G max values were quite larger than the minimum legal mesh size for gillnets and the inner sheet of trammel nets, indicating that the relevant current fisheries regulations cannot meet the requirements for sustainable exploitation of fish resources.

The small-scale trammel net fisheries are essential to the economy and well-being of coastal communities in the Yellow Sea, China. However, these fisheries are low efficient and urgently demand technical innovations to improve catch rates. In this study, we conducted field experiments in three traditional fishing grounds (Rizhao, Yantai, and Weihai) to test whether the addition of different colored light-emitting diodes (LEDs) fishing lights in the trammel nets could improve the catch rates of seven commercial species. Results showed that the effects of LEDs on catch rates were species-specific. Green LEDs could significantly increase the catch per unit effort (CPUE) of black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii), fat greenling (Hexagrammos otakii), marbled flounder (Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae), stone flounder (Platichthys bicoloratus), Asian paddle crab (Charybdis japonica), and mantis shrimp (Oratosquilla oratoria) by 40%-72% compared with unilluminated nets, while had no significant effect on the catch rates of swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus). Red LEDs harvested 58%-86% higher CPUE of fat greenling, marbled flounder, stone flounder, mantis shrimp, and swimming crab while catching fewer black rockfish and Asian paddle crab. Blue and white LEDs exhibited similar performance, which could significantly capture more black rockfish, fat greenling, and mantis shrimp and did not affect the catch rates of other species. The effects of LEDs were also size-dependent for certain species, and the catch rates generally increased with the length classes. Taking economic benefits into consideration, the green and red LEDs provided the highest profitability for Rizhao, while green LEDs performed best in Weihai and Yantai. This study is the first investigation on how artificial lights affected the catch rates of trammel nets. The findings of our study illustrated that trammel nets equipped with LEDs could serve as a viable fishing strategy in small-scale trammel net fisheries.
