This study focuses on formulating an integration algorithm for manufacturing firms aiming to infuse the immense potential of Industry 4.0 technologies into lean manufacturing systems. The goal is to unlock and harness the advantages offered by these advanced technologies in an economically efficient manner. An analytic approach has been implemented in this investigation, examining a broad array of relevant empirical research. This comprehensive analysis serves to derive a universal algorithm predicated on the principles of both lean methodology and Industry 4.0. The complexities and challenges of amalgamating lean methodology and Industry 4.0 have been scrutinized meticulously in this study. The study elaborates on the extent to which Industry 4.0 technologies can augment lean production practices, delves into the difficulties encountered by corporations during the integration process, and suggests measures to surmount these obstacles. Moreover, potential benefits realized through this integration are explored. The algorithm proffered in this study permits a phased integration approach. Firms have the flexibility to adopt the integration in specific production segments or processes initially and progressively expand, aligning with their capabilities, resources, and the level of process maturity. Such an integration strategy allows companies to leverage Industry 4.0 in overcoming restrictions traditionally associated with the lean approach.

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a fundamental role in the global economy. However, SMEs usually have different characteristics from larger enterprises, e.g., essential resource restrictions, lower performance, and higher environmental impacts. This requires them to search for strategies to be more competitive and sustainable. A possible solution relies on introducing Lean-Green practices. Previous research indicated that digitalization could be an enabler of Lean. Lean can also help to achieve increased environmental performance using the Lean-Green approach. In this study, this important yet under-studied area is investigated as we consider digitalization as an enabler for implementing lean in SMEs, with a focus on Lean-Green practices. A systematic literature review is executed, following a new framework based on topic modelling for extracting the papers. The topic modelling is executed through latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) which is a machine learning technique. In methodological means, this paper represents an example of the frontier of digitalization for research activities. Regarding the investigated focus, the main findings revealed that digitalization is an enabler to Lean and to Lean-Green. As digitalization supports information sharing, it consequently fosters performance measurement systems, improvements, and value chain integration.

Paper aims: To provide guidelines on current state of the literature on aspects related to the implementation of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) for operations flexibility in emerging economies, and derived from this, propose a conceptual framework for the analysis of the main topics studied. Originality:Based on previous literature reviews on related topics (I4.0 and flexibility), we recognized an opportunity to focus on developing countries which until now has not been documented. Research method:We carried out a systematic review of the literature together with a topic cluster analysis. Main findings:The study revealed that there is a perceived consensus on how Industry 4.0 technologies can impact flexibility in emerging countries. Cloud computing is by far the most adopted technology despite the fact that there is a wide concern about security issues. The use of other technologies and their impact appears to be incipient. Implications for theory and practice:The study presented here can be used as a starting point for new directions of research in terms of adoption of these technologies and new applications developed and/or customized to the realities of emerging countries.
