Studies have shown that individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) may benefit from cycling exercise. However, the supportive evidence remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to investigate the effects of cycling rehabilitation training (CRT) on the recovery of osteoarthritic knee joints. Five databases were searched with publishing date restrictions from 1 January 2000 to 1 March 2022. We included studies that 1) recruited participants with KOA, 2) used CRT in the intervention, 3) compared measurements before and after the intervention or between a KOA group and a healthy group, and 4) included the measurements of interest. The quality of the studies was assessed using the modified Downs and Black checklist. A random-effects meta-analysis of Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis index, Lequesne index, and Timed Up and Go test scores was performed. The changes in muscle strength, kinetics, and kinematics as a result of the intervention were summarised. The quality of the 19 included studies was moderate with a median quality score of 19.05. CRT improved muscle strength and physical function (SMD 0.94, 95% CI [0.66, 1.22]), and reduce pain (SMD 0.94, 95% CI [0.66, 1.22]) and joint stiffness (SMD 0.74, 95% CI [0.46, 1.01]) in KOA patients. Compared with healthy subjects, KOA patients showed increased extensor moments and abduction peak adduction angles of their knee joints, and decreased internal rotation moment and peak angles of knee flexion and extension. CRT was effective in relieving knee pain, restoring motor function, and improving lower limb muscle strength. Knee abduction moment may be an indicator of rehabilitation progress.

Osteoarthritis (OA) damages the articular cartilage of the knee and is a severe degenerative joint condition. Currently, OA diagnosis is carried out by symptom analysis and progressive evaluation of the radiographs, although the method is subjective. This work presents a novel computer aided diagnostic system to diagnose the severity of the disease in its early stages. The proposed method comprises of stages that include image pre-processing, extraction of features based on discrete wavelet decomposition, histogram, GLCM and texture features, and classification by stacked up-RBM Deep Belief Networks (Hybrid DBN) finally. The performance of HDBN is improved by optimizing the hyper parameters with the Salp Swarm Optimization Algorithm (SSA). Experiments conducted on the Kaggle database consisting of 7503 images demonstrated an overall accuracy of 99.45% with 100% sensitivity and specificity. The impact on isolated and combined feature contributions is also analyzed using 10-fold cross validation (CV).The robustness of the algorithm is tested on degraded images of salt-pepper, Gaussian, and Poisson noise, which proved the effectiveness of the method. Comparison of the method proposed with similar techniques is done by employing different optimization algorithms and classifiers.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA), is degenerative condition of knee joint which is more prevalent. Various treatments are available for OA knee. Blood Flow Restriction Therapy (BFRT) is effective training using low-load so that the excessive fatigue and strenuous exercises for strengthening muscles could be avoided which prevails more in Resisted exercises. This study is to assess effectiveness of BFRT on long term symptoms relief for patients with OA Knee. Objective: To assess effect of BFRT on pain, muscle strength and Quality of life of OA knee patients. Method: Randomly 46 participants were allocated in conventional and experimental Groups. The intervention to both groups was given for 1 week daily and the outcomes taken pre and post intervention were NPRS, 1RM strength, WOMAC scale and girth measurement. Results: Statistical significant difference was found in both the groups with p-values <0.05 for all the outcomes in within the group comparisons. In between the group comparisons, BFRT found to have more significance in mean difference compared to resisted exercises for all the outcome parameters. Conclusion: It was concluded that BFRT has more effectiveness in reducing pain, improving strength, girth of muscle and physical function compared to simple resistive exercises in patients with Osteoarthritis of knee.
