An Overview of New Progresses in Understanding Pipeline Corrosion

Abstract: An approach to achieving the ambitious goal of cost effectively extending the safe operation life of energy pipeline to 100 years is the application of health monitoring and life prediction tools that are able to provide both long-term remnant pipeline life prediction and in-situ pipeline condition monitoring. A critical step is the enhancement of technological capabilities that are required for understanding and quantifying the effects of key factors influencing buried steel pipeline corrosion and environment… Show more

“…The principle of this pipeline condition monitoring tool is that real time monitoring of localised corrosion, ineffective CP, coating disbondment and degradation by placing sensors at strategic and 'worst-case scenario' locations of a pipeline would enable site-specific and in situ warning of pipeline failures. 96 These electrochemical methods have the potential of not only measuring corrosion rates but also more importantly they provide an insight into the electrochemical process. This is an invaluable contribution because measuring is the first step to understanding the electrochemical process leading to corrosion and to eventually help preventing it.…”

“…Corrosion in metallic pipelines can be classified into two categories: external and internal. External corrosion is generally controlled using organic coatings and cathodic protection, while corrosion inhibitors are widely used to fight internal corrosion [9,10]. Various coating types have been used to protect pipeline surfaces against corrosion [11].…”

“…They are used as a coating over metal surfaces due to its resistance towards wear and corrosion. Significance of Fe-Cr-C alloys as precipitated carbides is also well known in several industries, such as drilling [2,3], mining [4,5], oil and gas [6,7] and fuel cells [8,9].…”
