Indoor radon is a major hazard to human health; it is one of the leading causes of lung cancer. Therefore, radon research in Asia has intensified recently due to the growing awareness of the harm that radon poses. An analysis of the collected literature data showed that in Asia–Oceania, some regions have—or are believed to have—little indoor radon problems due to climate and low Rn ground. It can be concluded that countries have their own approaches, techniques, and protocols. Data were not harmonized within each region; however, measurement techniques were compared by regional intercomparison exercises. The situation differs regarding studies on the usability of radon as a tracer or potential predictor of tectonic phenomena, as some countries are in seismically active zones, such as India, Taiwan, China, Japan, etc. India and Taiwan are global leaders in this research, as well as Italy, which is another seismically affected country. We provide an overview of radon-related surveying and research activities conducted in the western, southern, and eastern Asian regions over the past few years. Additionally, we observed that the number of indoor radon measurements per million inhabitants increases as the human development index (HDI) increases.

Labuan, Miri, Kundasang and Raub regions of Malaysia have very different geological formations and settings that could result in different levels of natural radioactivity. Hence, this study determines the influence of different geological formations on radioactivity in these locations using field measurements, petrology and geochemistry. A total of 141 gamma dose rates and 227 beta flux measurements were collected using Polimaster survey meters (PM1405) in these four regions. The gamma dose rate values range from 0.37 to 0.05 µSv/h with a mean value of 0.11 µSv/h. Beta flux values range from 3.46 to 0.12 CPS with a mean value of 0.57 CPS. Mineralogy and elemental composition of the different rock types were analysed using thin-section petrography, XRD, ICP and pXRF methods. Felsic igneous rocks such as syenite and granite have higher natural radioactivity and contain more radionuclide-bearing minerals such as apatite, zircon, allanite, K-feldspar, titanite, muscovite and biotite. Metamorphic rocks have the second highest natural radioactivity and contain fewer radioactive minerals. The natural radioactivity of sedimentary rocks mostly depends on their clay content. The gamma dose rate maps show that igneous and metamorphic regions around Raub have higher radioactivity compared to the sedimentary-dominated regions around Miri and Labuan. Annual effective dose (AED) and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) were calculated to evaluate the potential health risk for inhabitants of these regions. Labuan and Miri are considered to be safe zones with respect to natural radioactivity as the results show little to no risk for the public, compared with the Raub region, which is medium to high risk.

Radon gas emission is an emerging phenomenon that modern lifestyles have become a potential danger to humans. So, stochastic evaluation of the amount of this hazardous gas in urban scale and residential buildings can be critical in identifying environmental health risks. A novel fuzzy Radon Hazard Index is proposed in this research to assess statistical radon environmental health risks. The output index FRHI ranges from 0 (No Hazard) to 100 (The highest degree of hazard). The approach can serve as a circumstantially integrated standard for stochastic radon risk assessment and management because innovation fuzzi es this eld's most important stochastic standards. In this study, rst, Radon was measured in the urban scale building, and then, Arc GIS software prepared natural Radon emission zoning maps at urban and geological scales. A residential building unit in one of the critical areas has been selected. Some corrective actions have been adopted to reduce Radon in urban building units. The FRHI Assessment for stochastic environmental health risk evaluation shows that the initial fuzzy level for the mean value of FRHI is Hazardous (for FRHI value equal to 60.1) determined by Red color. This is while the Maximum FRHI level for 48 hours after installation is Rather Hazardous (for FRHI value equal to 44.8) determined with orange color, and the maximum statistical environmental health risk after steady-state installation would fall into an improved category. So identifying critical areas can provide exceptional control at the urban scale building that reduces the risks of natural Radon.
