An overview of the digital occlusion technologies: Intraoral scanners, jaw tracking systems, and computerized occlusal analysis devices

Abstract: Objectives Within the development of digital technologies, dental professionals aim to integrate virtual diagnostic articulated casts obtained by using intraoral scanners (IOSs), the mandibular motion of the patient recorded by using an optical jaw tracking system, and the information provided by computerized occlusal analysis systems. This article describes the various digital technologies available for obtaining the digital occlusion of a patient and outlines its challenges and limitations. Overview The fact… Show more

“…VR facilitates highly accurate superimposition of digital impressions over 2D facial photos and/or 3D facial scans transferred to 3D models ( Coachman et al, 2020 ). AI algorithms can facilitate the detection of occlusal contacts in sequence and optimize occlusal pressure distribution on the restoration ( Revilla-León et al, 2023 ). Some chairside scanner manufacturers use AI technology to reduce digital impression discrepancies caused by unwanted soft tissues, such as Itero Element 5D (Align Technology, Inc, San Jose, CA, USA) that has integrated both the AI-digital scan and design improvements as well as caries lesion detection using near infra red irradiation ( Brown, 2019 ; Moran et al, 2022 ; Schlenz et al, 2022 ).…”

“…In the dental domain, functional analysis refers to a comprehensive examination and assessment of the dynamic interactions among the teeth, jaw joints, muscles, and other oral structures during various activities like biting, chewing, and speaking. Digital methods of recording the jaw movements are available (Revilla-León et al, 2023 ) but costly and therefore rarely employed. Consequently, insertion of FDPs often requires adaptation and reworking.…”
