An Overview of the Role of the Navsea Human Factors Engineering Program in Ship Design

Abstract: This paper provides a context within which the role of human factors engineering (HFE) for Naval ship design may be understood. HFE is defined and its history as part of engineering design teams is traced. The role of HFE in ship systems design is defined, and the HFE Technology for Ships Program, managed by SEA 061R, is described. The rationale for inclusion of HFE in the design process is presented, the methodology whereby it is incorporated into the design process is detailed, methodology to assess the appl… Show more

“…Habitability is one of the domains of the human systems integration process and is an important factor for optimizing human performance and improving system performance (ASTM, 2015). Historically, better habitability has been associated with enhanced crew morale, increased personnel retention, and improved ship's company effectiveness (OPNAV, 2012;Stein, Benel, & Malone, 1983;Wilcove & Schwerin, 2008).…”

“…The U.S. military recognized the necessity of ergonomic design early and tried to apply an ergonomic approach and reformed organizations for this purpose in 1983 [8]. The items to apply ergonomic technology in warship design and operation part are information input/output, control device, car control device, working area, space arrangement, environment, equipment, and software interface, etc.…”

“…Recently, ergonomic design criteria has become an essential issue in a warship since it can improve safety and reliability as well as simplify maintenance, operation and education references [7], [8]. Ergonomic warship design criteria can be defined as a standard for design, selection, arrangement and operation of equipments, facilities and systems considering Korean body type so as to increase comfort, efficiency and safety of navy crew while performing their mission.…”
