An unequal clustering algorithm based on energy balance for wireless sensor networks

Abstract: Sensor nodes in sensor networks often gather data and deliver them to the sink. However, the energy and radio range constraints force them to cooperate in transmitting the data to the destination with multihop communication. To achieve this, nodes have to be clustered and some of them are elected as the cluster head nodes to transmit the aggregated data. Unfortunately, the clustering brings extra traffic load to the cluster head nodes, particularly those closer to the sink. These nodes die faster than before a… Show more

“…Different from previous research [ 33 ], the cluster sizes are identical instead of increasing gradually from the sink towards the network periphery. The CS-based data collection process along the CH chain can balance the energy consumption of all cluster heads and avoid the energy hole problem.…”

“…The simulation has been done to evaluate the performance of both individual clusters and that of entire network. The performance of the proposed method has also been compared with unequal clustering approaches viz PADCP (Cheng, Ruan, Cheng, & Hsu, 2006) and EUCS (Xu, Zhu, Luo, Wu & Ren, 2012). The simulation results indicate that the performance of our method Ev-CSC is better in terms of network lifetime and energy efficiency.…”

“…Simulation results show that after applying our proposed cluster size control method, performance of these algorithms has been improved. We also compared Ev-CSC with other cluster size control methods, EUCS (Xu, Zhu, Luo, Wu & Ren, 2012)and PADCP (Cheng, Ruan, Cheng, & Hsu, 2006) in section 5.3 at (i) Different node densities (ii) For both uniform and non uniform deployment (ii) Different sink positions and (iii) Different shapes of deployment region.…”
