An Unprecedented Medium-Chain Diunsaturated N-acylhomoserine Lactone from Marine Roseobacter Group Bacteria

Abstract: N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs), bacterial signaling compounds involved in quorum-sensing, are a structurally diverse group of compounds. We describe here the identification, synthesis, occurrence and biological activity of a new AHL, N-((2E,5Z)-2,5-dodecadienoyl)homoserine lactone (11) and its isomer N-((3E,5Z)-3,5-dodecadienoyl)homoserine lactone (13), occurring in several Roseobacter group bacteria (Rhodobacteraceae). The analysis of 26 strains revealed the presence of 11 and 13 in six of them originating … Show more

“…Much research has been devoted to identifying AHLs from marine bacteria, and their effects on microalgae are varied and often subtle. AHLs are frequently isolated from microalgae-associated bacteria, and these bacteria often produce a diverse array of AHLs [ 25 , 40 , 41 ]. For example, Ziesche et al conducted a chemical survey of marine Roseobacter isolates, identifying a wide variety of AHLs.…”

“…The gas chromatograph was programmed accordingly: 50°C (5 min isothermal), increasing with 5°C min –1 to 320°C, and operated in splitless mode. The positions of double-bonds were confirmed by DMDS derivatization as described ( Neumann et al, 2013 ; Ziesche et al, 2019 ).…”
