An Unusual Case of Baclofen Abuse

Abstract: Baclofen was initially used for the treatment of spastic conditions. Last decade has seen its emergence as a treatment of profound interest in alcohol dependence, opiates and cocaine abuse, and tobacco addiction. However, the published literature on baclofen abuse is sparse. Here, we report a patient with baclofen abuse.

“…57 Further studies have demonstrated GABA B 's role in the reward process, and this offers a plausible explanation for why these GABA B agonists elicit similar addiction profiles. 58 Though this clarifies the sedative nature of GHB, it offers little explanation for its excitatory effects, let alone its natural role in the CNS. It was not until the discovery of a GHB-specific receptor in 1982 that GHB's concentration-dependent nature was fully understood.…”

“…This idea is supported by the reportedly similar addictive nature of baclofen, given that both substances act as GABA B agonists, though baclofen does so selectively . Though this clarifies the sedative nature of GHB, it offers little explanation for its excitatory effects, let alone its natural role in the CNS.…”

“…While an important consideration, once a drug is labeled as having potential abuse liability, its consideration as a possible treatment option is often dismissed by clinical practitioners. For example, because of their varying degrees of possible abuse liability, gabapentin [ 6 , 7 ], pregabalin [ 8 ], baclofen [ 9 , 10 ], and bupropion [ 11 ] may not be routinely used generally by some practitioners when treating SUDs, despite the frequent use of these agents in clinical practice.…”
