An Unusual Case of Extrapulmonary Hydatid Cyst Masquerading as a Mediastinal Tumor

Abstract: Hydatid disease is a common disease in developing countries. The usual presentations include lung and liver cysts. Herein, we present a case of extrapulmonary, intrathoracic hydatid cyst with chest wall and spinal cord involvement, with the patient having symptoms of neurological compression and chest pain. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) showed a large, septated, cystic mass which was eroding third, fourth and fifth ribs posteriorly, undermining the transverse process and pushing the spinal cord … Show more

“…Common laboratory markers used in infections such as C-reactive protein (CRP), estimated sedimentation rate (ESR) and white blood cell (WBC) count are often within normal range and they are variable findings. 36 , 46 , 50 , 61 Eosinophilia, commonly seen in parasitic infections is not a consistent or reliable finding. 2 , 46 , 62 ELISA and Western Blot are the most commonly used serologic assays for echinococcal antibody detection in liver disease with an 80–100% sensitivity and 88–96% specificity.…”

“…Drug treatment is appropriate for one month with albendazole or three months with mebendazole for incidental cyst rupture to decrease the risk of secondary echinococcosis from the seeding of protoscolices in the abdominal cavity. Albendazole can also be provided to patients that have not recovered after the surgery; the drug does not cure the disease but enhances the quality of life and possibilities of survival in those patients and therefore is the primary prescription in hydatid disease (Hans et al, 2019). During follow-up, laboratory monitoring, including complete blood count (CBC) and liver function tests (LFT), were surveyed every fifteen days for three months and onetime in three months for a year.…”
