An Unusual Case of Paraganglioma of the Broad Ligament Presenting as Cystic Mass

Abstract: In clinical practice, broad ligament (BL) tumors are seldom encountered. Paraganglioma of the BL is exceedingly rare entity. Here we present an unusual case of broad ligament paraganglioma, presenting as a cystic mass, in a 50-year-old postmenopausal female. A high degree of suspicion along with detailed immunohistopathological work-up is needed for arriving at an accurate diagnosis.

“…The following parameters may be taken into account for malignant potential and behaviour of paragangliomas: location, size, Pheochromocytoma of Adrenal Gland Scales Score(PASS) ,S-100 immunoreactivity and Ki-67 labelling index. [6] In the present case, the tumor cells were positive for synaptophysin and chromogranin indicating that it was a neuroendocrine tumor. Pancytokeratin and EMA were negative, indicating nonepithelial tumor.…”

In a review of the literature, the vagina is the most common site, with occasional cases also reported in the vulva, ovary, broad ligament, and uterine corpus 3–16. To date, as far as we are aware, no cases arising in the uterine cervix have been reported.…”
