An Unusual Cause of Conductive Hearing Loss

Abstract: There are many causes of conductive hearing loss. Otoplasty is a commonly performed cosmetic surgery to correction for prominent ear. We discussed an unusual cause of conductive hearing loss, bilateral complete meatal obstruction following otoplasty, in this article. This complication was probably due to unsuitable placement of the Furnas sutures. In the literature, as a cause of conductive hearing loss, unilateral complete meatal obstruction has been described rarely, but bilateral complete obstruction has no… Show more

“…All otoplastic methods have some associated risks or complications that can be divided into early and late sequelae, with the former occurring up to 14 days postoperatively and the latter occurring after the initial 14-day period [1]. The early complications include hematoma, bleeding, infection, skin reactions and wound dehiscence, while late complications include suture extrusion, hypersensitivity, asymmetry, insufficient correction, overcorrection, temporal nerve paresis, torticollis and bilateral outer ear canal stenoses [2][3][4]. In this paper, we discussed an unusual early complication, frontal cicatricial alopecia, due to a post-otoplasty over-stretched ear bandage.…”

“…14 Conchamastoid suturing requires special care; placing sutures too far anteriorly on the mastoid or too far posteriorly on the concha can excessively rotate the concha, obstructing the external auditory canal. 26 Spira and Stal have modified this technique. They suggest using a laterally-based conchal cartilage flap that is sutured to the mastoid periosteum.…”
