An unusual cause of small bowel perforation: apricot pit

Show more

“…[6] Apart from plum seed, apricots, persimmons, peanuts and nectarine have been reported to cause perforation. [7] It appears that in our case, presence of seed itself led to irreducibil-ity of the previously reducible umbilical hernia and also sharp ends of the seed, in addition to attempt by peristalsis led to traumatic perforation in bowel inside the obstructed umbilical hernia.…”

“…Other fruits, such as apricots, persimmons, and plums, have previously been described in the literature as a cause of SBO, either through direct mechanical obstruction by the pit or through formation of a phytobezoar [46]. In this case, the nectarine pit appears to have caused a small bowel perforation in a position proximal to its final resting position near the ileocaecal valve.…”

“…Certain organic bezoar can be managed non-invasively through dissolution with enzymatic therapy, but any bezoar causing acute bowel obstruction will require endoscopic or surgical extraction. Impacted enteral bezoars can be managed by open or laparoscopic approaches [3]. During surgery the bezoar can either be milked through the ileocecal valve into the cecum where it will subsequently pass in the stool; however, the majority of impacted bezoars need to be extracted via an enterotomy [8].…”

“…Bowel obstruction from edible items may occur in those with gastrointestinal motility disorders, Guillian-Barre syndrome, hypothyroidism and fast eaters [3]. Food items that have been reported to cause obstruction include dried fruit, apricot, coconut, raw banana and a whole lemon [3][4][5]. We report a case of acute small bowel obstruction requiring operative intervention in a 59-year-old lady caused by undigested vegetable.…”
