An update on dietary consideration in inflammatory bowel disease: anthocyanins and more

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic idiopathic inflammatory disorder. A wealth of data pointed out that various aspects of chronic inflammation may be affected by several specific dietary factors. This paper calls attention to anthocyanins enriched plant food and anthocyanin dietary supplements, whose role in the management of IBD and its associated oncogenesis deems crucial. Area covered: We updated the most relevant dietary anthocyanins with potential anti-colitis and preventive effect on inflammat… Show more

“…Delphinidin induced dose-(80-150 µM) and time-dependent autophagic vacuolization and induced the lipidated form of LC3 II in human HCC cell lines (SMMC7721, HCCLM3 and MHCC97L). In these cells, the inhibition of delphinidin-induced autophagy resulted in necrotic cell death, likely because of an ATP deficiency that prevented caspase activation and subsequent apoptosis [155]. Anthocyanidins (pelargonidin, cyanidin, malvidin, peonidin and delphinidin) (100 µM) induced autophagy in HeLa cervical cancer cells.…”

“…They are actually water-soluble pigments and abundant in diet like blueberry, raspberry, bilberry, black rice and black beans, etc. Anthocyanins were shown capable of inhibiting pro-inflammation molecules and pathways [32], which were considered contributing the anti-inflammatory effect and alleviation of tissue damage in UC patients [33]. As substantial trials are yet to be cast out in IBD or colon cancer patients, it is still inconclusive for deciding whether anthocyanins should be taken to benefit the disease.…”
