An updated checklist of Chironomidae (Diptera) from the Amur River basin (Russian Far East)

Abstract: A long-term study implemented in the Amur River basin enabled us to generate an updated checklist of 606 valid species in Chironomidae (Diptera) which are composed of 129 genera and six subfamilies, with 98 (17%) described new species belonging to 46 genera. Among the 98 recently described species, 46 ones (45%), were considered as possible endemics and sub-endemics. The numbers of species and genera by subfamilies is as follows: Podonominae (3 species; 3 genera), Tanypodinae (17; 9), Diamesinae (25; 11), Prod… Show more

“…Indeed, we identifed one larva in a winter sample (December 01, 2019), from Aït Bouguemaz river, at Tabant (B6, 1849 m of altitude). Tis Holarctic species [148,149] is widely spread in the Mediterranean region [20]. P. frequens occurs in rivers, lakes, coastal ponds, and brackish marshes [20,150,151].…”

“…a reduction of the taxonomical precision to genus level lowered the statistical significance and required careful examination of the species preferences of the genus, as emphasised by orendt (2018) in a 10 year-study on chironomids from German lowland running waters differing in degradation. For some regions (i.e., amur river, russia), long-term studies produced checklists of hundreds of species of chironomids, with the description of many new species to science (Yavorskaya et al, 2018).…”

“…According to data on the taxonomy and geographical distribution of known Synorthocladius species from the Palaearctic and neighbouring biogeographical regions ( Pankratova 1970 ; Sasa and Yamamoto 1977 ; Sasa 1981 ; Cranston et al 1989 ; Reiss 1989 ; Evrard 1995 ; Liu and Wang 2005 ; Langton and Pinder 2007 ; Lencioni et al 2011 , 2012 , 2018 ; Ashe and O’Connor 2012 ; Moubayed-Breil and Ashe 2012 ; Plociennik and Pesic 2012 ; Sæther and Spies 2013 ; Plociennik and Karaouzas 2014 ; Makarchenko and Makarchenko 2017 ; Kettani and Moubayed-Breil 2018 ; Murray et al 2018 ; Yavorskaya et al 2018 ; Rossaro et al 2019 ; Moubayed-Breil 2020 ), there are eight valid species of the genus worldwide, of which only one, S. semivirens (Kieffer, 1909), was reported from Europe. The present description of S. federicoi sp.…”
