Anaemia and pregnancy: Anaesthetic implications

Abstract: Anaemia in pregnancy defined as haemoglobin (Hb) level of < 10 gm/dL, is a qualitative or quantitative deficiency of Hb or red blood cells in circulation resulting in reduced oxygen (O2)- carrying capacity of the blood. Compensatory mechanisms in the form of increase in cardiac output (CO), PaO2, 2,3 diphosphoglycerate levels, rightward shift in the oxygen dissociation curve (ODC), decrease in blood viscosity and release of renal erythropoietin, get activated to variable degrees to maintain tissue oxygenation … Show more

“…1991). Furthermore, in some species chronic anaemia may also confound the use of PaO 2 measurements, as it is known to result in elevations in 2, 3‐diphospohglycerate concentrations within red blood cells, which will alter the shape and position of the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve (Power & Kam 2008; Grewal 2010). However in sheep this effect is very small (Bunn 1971) and at the moderate levels of anaemia found in the sheep in this study is unlikely to have significantly changed the position of the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve.…”

“…Anaemia as haematological defect affects people of all ages resulting in marked reduction of Red Blood Cells Counts (RBCs) and circulating haemoglobin concentration below required amounts needed to meet physiological needs [4]. Reduction of haemoglobin is usually accompanied by a fall in red blood cell count and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) but these amounts may be normal in some patients with subnormal haemoglobin level [5].…”

“…La anemia es una condición clínica que se caracteriza por la deficiencia cualitativa o cuantitativa de la hemoglobina o glóbulos rojos. Asimismo, produce una reducción del aporte de oxígeno a nivel sanguíneo y tisular 1 . La clasificación del nivel de anemia, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud, se basa en los valores de su concentración sérica.…”
