Anaerobic Bacteria in Normal and in Chronically Inflamed Paranasal Sinus Mucosa

Abstract: The bacterial flora of 47 maxillary sinuses was examined. The growth of anaerobic germs in 23 specimens of chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses was compared to 16 specimens of normal maxillary sinuses. Anaerobic growth was registered in 56.5% of chronically inflamed as well as in 43.7% of healthy sinuses. Statistically this is no significant difference. As anaerobic bacteria should not preponderate and turn pathogenic, the aim of treatment in chronic sinusitis should be the restitution of drainage and ventil… Show more

“…In addition, endoscopic mucosal appearances do not always correspond to the histopathologic changes of the maxillary mucosa (Mann & Trong 1979; Kamel 1989; Stierna et al. 1991), and even the fact that the maxillary sinus in the healthy state is not sterile supports the discrepancy between endoscopic findings and mucosal pathology (Hartog 1997; Posawetz et al. 1991; Rong et al.…”

“…In this study, the 56.6 per cent positive culture rate of the swab specimens, and the 48.4 per cent rate of the mucosal specimens indicate that the endoscopically normal maxillary sinus is not sterile. However, this does not mean that the normal maxillary sinus is not sterile, although the endoscopically normal maxillary sinus was considered to be a healthy sinus (Posawetz et al, 1991).…”

“…Besides clinical history and radiological examination, endoscopy is another way to examine the disease status of the maxillary sinus. Posawetz et al (1991) denned healthy maxillary sinuses as present when the endoscopic findings of maxillary sinuses included normal mucosa and free sinus ostia. Bacteria were cultured from 75 per cent of swab specimens from their 16 endoscopically normal maxillary sinuses.…”

“…In our material, the flora was exclusively aerobic in 36.8%, anaerobic in 10.5%, and mixed in 52.6% of cases. Posawetz et al 49 notice that anaerobic bacteria in health should not prevail over aerobic. The claim by Kalcioglu et al 50 that the carrier of Alloiococcus otitidis may be useful in identifying patients being predisposed to sinusitis development, however interesting, seems doubtful.…”
