Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor as Highly Efficient and Reliable Technology for Wastewater Treatment—A Review

Abstract: In this review paper, Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR) is considering as highly efficient and reliable technology for organic material removal from wastewater with no additional energy requirement for aeration. AnMBR is a combination of conventional anaerobic technology and modern membrane system. AnMBR is cost effective alternative technology with pros of anaerobic microbial activity because Methogenic microorganism can convert organic pollutant load of wastewater into renewable energy in the form of met… Show more

“…However, since the ammonia passes through the membrane, ammonia-rich permeate is generated through the system. On the other hand, excellent solid matter removal by the membrane provides an opportunity for the convenient application of resource recovery (Jain 2018). Moreover, nutrient-concentrated excess sludge can be valorized with a subsequent process to maximize the resourcerecovery and circularity.…”

“…Consequently, the concentrated sludge is recycled back to the reactor, while the permeate is discharged. Usually, to provide the driving force, a crossflow velocity from 2 to 4 m/s along the membrane surface is used [64,74,114]. Undoubtedly, the advantage of this AnMBRs configuration is easy membrane replacement and the possibility of the module cleaning without interrupting the reactor operation [115].…”

“…AnMBR has emerged as an alternative MBR configuration that improves the management of carbon and nutrients in the MBR process. AnMBR was first introduced for treating high-strength wastewater [ 228 ]. The growing interest in AnMBR has mainly been driven by the capacity of this system to convert carbon to methane-rich biogas.…”
