Anaesthesia or sedation for MRI in children

Abstract: The MRI unit is a work station where all processes have to be well planned and staff trained to guarantee maximum patient safety, superior quality of imaging and economic needs. For optimal performance trained, experienced and certified personnel, appropriate drugs for the individual patient risk profile and sufficient monitoring equipment are essential.

“…The optimal delivery of sedation is accomplished by clinician strained in anesthesia. Their experience would allow them to identify and utilize the best available drugs and techniques to full potential to obtain the optimal outcome [6][7][8]10,12,15,19,20]. This would enhance patient safety and also result in studies yielding data with comparable methodologies, skills, and techniques.…”

“…For the best quality of magnetic resonance imaging and diagnosis, complete immobilization of the patient is needed during scanning, often assisted by general anesthesia or sedation. 3 However, special anesthesia instruments made of nonmagnetic materials needed for MRI scanning are not available at our university dental hospital.…”

“…The required intense magnetic fields create unique problems with the usage of standard anesthesia machines, syringe pumps, and physiologic monitors (electrocardiogram, pulse oximeter, capnograph, and noninvasive blood pressure). [1][2][3] Moreover, the scanning procedure lasts around 1 hour. In addition, there is high-level acoustic noise in the MRI room.…”
