Analgesic Nephropathy and Renal Replacement Therapy in Australia

Abstract: Background and objectives: This study examined age-specific incidence and prevalence of renal replacement therapy attributed to analgesic nephropathy from 1971 through 2005 and adjusted comorbidity prevalence and survival of patients who had analgesic nephropathy and were on renal replacement therapy (compared with control subjects without diabetes).Design, setting, participants, & measurements: This retrospective cohort study, using data from the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant registry, inc… Show more

“…Numbers of analgesic nephropathy patients are decreasing over time, because the offending analgesics were withdrawn in Australia in the 1960s and 1970s 33 . The numbers of incident patients with polycystic kidney disease provide insight into changes in propensity to treat people with end‐stage kidney disease with RRT.…”

“…Although a well-recognized condition to most physicians, its etiopathogenesis remains controversial and the particular agents known to induce AN and the cumulative doses required have not been established. Formerly one of the commoner causes of end-stage renal failure (ESRF), there has been a marked decline in the prevalence and incidence of AN in recent decades 12). At its peak in the 1980s, AN accounted for 15% to 20% of cases of ESRF, but has fallen to approximately 1% in Western countries today 34567)…”
