Mahakam is the second longest river in Indonesia and it functions as a source of raw water for drinking and other essential activities for the Samarinda people. Furthermore activities in the watershed generate solid waste such as plastic, which enters the waters and is potentially degraded into microplastics. There is a possibility that the presence of microplastics is affected by anthropogenic types along the river. Therefore, this research aims to determine the effect of anthropogenic type and river depth on the microplastic abundance in the Mahakam River. The samples were taken using an integrated approach at 3 depths, namely 0.5, 1, and 1.5 m, in 2 locations with different anthropogenic types. The sampling points include Kampung Tenun and Bukuan Villages, which represented densely populated and non-populated areas, respectively. The water collected was prepared with the following steps, which include filtration with 180 μm nylon, elimination of organic matter, density separator, and final filtration. Microplastic samples were identified based on the type, color, size, and type of polymer using a microscope and FTIR. The results show that there are 3 types of microplastics, 4 colors, and 5 size categories dominated by fiber type, black, and the smallest size, respectively. There are differences in abundance in Kampung Tenun and Bukuan Villages, namely 91 particles/L and 71 particles/L, indicating the effect of the anthropogenic type. Sampling depth also affects abundance, hence, the greater the depth, the lower the abundance value. It was also discovered that anthropogenic type and depth factors influence the identified polymer types. Nylon and nitrile polymer types were found at 2 locations and 3 sampling depths, but PVC, PETE, and PS were only found at certain locations. Furthermore, Bukuan Village, with a greater environmental factor value, has a smaller abundance than Kampung Tenun Village. Microplastics are plastic particles measuring ±5 mm. The accumulation of microplastics will be a hazard and threat to the environment because of its persistent nature and difficult to degrade. Human activities and pollutant sources greatly affect the function of microplastics. This study aims to determine the types and types of microplastics in the waters at 5 locations of the Pemalang River estuary. Water sampling represents different activities, namely ponds, tourist attractions, mangrove areas, fish auction sites and river estuaries. The total result found was 19.10 x 102 particles/m3. The types of microplastics found were fibres, fragments and films. The highest abundance of microplastics was found on Widuri Beach with a total of 5.45 x 102 particles/m3. The most common type of microplastic found in Pemalang waters is film. This is presumably because Widuri beach is a beach that is dense with tourist visits. Meanwhile, the types of microplastics in mangrove areas, ship port, fish market and fishponds have a range of values that are not much different, namely 2.33 − 4.53 x 102 particles/m3. This is presumably because waste is more easily trapped in the mangrove roots and accumulates more.

Every year, 0.48-1.29 million tonnes of plastic waste is estimated to enter the waters due to poor plastic waste management in Indonesia. Plastic waste has the potential to be degraded into smaller particles through ultraviolet (UV) radiation, weathering process, water currents, physical-mechanical and biodegradation. Plastics with particle sizes between >1 μm and <5 are categorized as microplastics (MP). Microplastic particles are mainly distributed in surface waters. Rivers are considered as the main route of plastic transportation from the land to the ocean. The Brantas River in Surabaya is the main downstream section of the Brantas River and plays an important role in providing clean water for Surabaya City, aquatic biota habitat, and irrigation. With extreme weather conditions such as long dry seasons and high rainfall in the rainy season distribution and abundance of microplastics in water bodies/rivers tend to vary. The study's goal is to determine the effect of seasonal water volume (dry and rainy) on the abundance and characteristics of microplastics in water and sediment samples from the downstream Brantas River (Surabaya city). Observations of the abundance of microplastics in water and sediment at three stations during the dry season revealed a trend of increasing abundance downstream. Microplastics were abundant in the water at sta 1 with an average of 0.8 particles/L, sta 2 with 1.25 particles/L, and sta 3 with 1.02 particles/L. The abundance of microplastics in the sediment at sta 1 averaged 0.2 particles/gr, sta 2 0.51 particles/gr, and sta3 0.25 particles/gr. Meanwhile, in the rainy season, the abundance of microplastics in water and sediment shows a higher abundance compared to the dry season. Abundance of microplastics in the water at sta 1 with an average of 0.9 particles/L, sta 2 1.24 particles/L, and sta3 1.17 particles/L. The abundance of microplastics in the sediment at sta 1 averaged 0.55 particles/gr, sta 2 0.56 particles/gr, and sta3 0.60 particles/gr.
