Analyses of High‐Iron Sedimentary Bedrock and Diagenetic Features Observed With ChemCam at Vera Rubin Ridge, Gale Crater, Mars: Calibration and Characterization

Abstract: Curiosity investigated a topographic rise named Vera Rubin Ridge (VRR) in Gale Crater, for which a distinct hematite-like signature was observed from orbit. However, the Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) and Alpha Particle x-ray Spectrometer (APXS) instruments on board the rover did not record any significant iron enrichment in the bulk of the ridge compared to previous terrains. For this study, we have reverified ChemCam iron calibration at moderate abundances and developed more accurate calibrations at high-iro… Show more

“…High‐Fe compositions are, however, still poorly represented in the current database (Clegg et al, 2017), with only two samples with >40 wt.% FeO T , which notably leads to an underestimation of FeO T in Fe‐oxide‐dominated compositions on Mars. Recent laboratory LIBS analyses of hematite‐basalt mixtures and iron meteorite samples yielded improved predictions for FeO T (David et al, 2020). While this laboratory work was not yet incorporated in the ChemCam quantification models at the time of writing, the data for FeO T from David et al, 2020) will be used in this study to characterize the variability of FeO T associated with diagenesis on VRR, especially for high‐FeO T abundances.…”

Also, the abundances in FeO T reported here corresponds to the total iron oxide content, as ChemCam is unable to distinguish native, ferrous, and ferric iron.…”
