Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Douglas ex Loudon) was distributed from its natural range in western North America to different destinations, primarily to Europe (Scandinavia, British Islands), South America (Chile, Argentina), and New Zealand. It is used for its superior timber production and resistance to environmental conditions. This literature review paper consists of 150 references and presents a summary of research results dealing with the lodgepole pine potential in general with a specific focus on Europe from 1910 to 2022. It summarizes the importance, taxonomy, biological and ecological characteristics, site requirements, production and silviculture, risks and pests, as well as the potential of this tree species for forestry and the wood industry in relation to global climate change. Pinus contorta also has a considerable potential in Central Europe, especially at extreme sites with strong anthropogenic impact and in polluted regions. This tree species is very resistant to climatic factors and extreme events compared to other coniferous tree species. Moreover, its annual increment reached from 3 m3·ha−1·yr−1 on reclamation sites to 18 m3·ha−1·yr−1 in favourable environmental conditions. On the other hand, caution must be taken for possible invasive behaviour outside its natural range. Its importance can increase with ongoing climate change and the decline of native tree species.

Only 1.82% of the Czech forests are covered by the introduced (exotic, non-native) tree species, they represent only a very minor part of the forest area in the Czech Republic. Despite this fact under certain circumstances and locally, they can play an important role in the forest restoration of declined forests. The main non-native tree species used in the Czech Republic are: black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirbel] Franco), grand fir (Abies grandis [Douglas ex D. Don] Lindl.), black walnut (Juglans nigra L.), northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.), and blue spruce (Picea pungens Engelm.). Other tree species are cultivated on very small areas, despite their much larger potential. The aim of the presented review paper is to summarize information on the introduced tree species, available especially from national sources, and give comprehensive information concerning the potential and risk of their use in the conditions of the Czech Republic. The authors mention also other tree species eligible for silviculture under current as well as future climatic circumstances. The current area and silvicultural potential in the climate changing conditions are analysed and summarized.

Volume increment is one of the main concerns in forestry practice. The aim of our study was to examine the impact of factors influencing the periodic annual increment of oak. To meet our objective, we used measurement data from the national forest inventory in Poland from 2005 to 2019 for oak-dominated stands. Our study used data of 1464 sample plots with dominant oak species (Quercus sessilis Ehrh. ex Schur and Quercus robur L.) measured within the national forest inventory in Poland. We developed models explaining the dependence of the periodic annual volume increment on stand characteristics using the generalized additive model. The generalized additive model allows us to analyze each variable’s effect on the dependent variable, with all other variables fixed. We documented the effect of age, height, basal area, and relative spacing index (RSI) on the periodic annual volume increment (PAIv) of oaks in Poland. The PAIv of oaks decreased gradually as the tree aged. The dependence of the PAIv on stand density was shown through its relationship with the basal area and RSI. The developed model explained about 64.6% of the periodic annual volume increment variance.
