Analysis and assessment of urban flash floods on areas with limited available altimetry data (Arouca, NW Portugal): a methodological approach

Abstract: The flooding of small water courses is a key issue in numerous urban areas. In Arouca village (NW Portugal) the urbanisation process in the past three decades promoted a complex urban hydrological response which has been reflected on the increase of urban flooding events. Therefore, a methodological approach was applied to assess problematic areas to urban flash floods taking into account the lack of altimetry data. For this purpose, the precipitation events and the rainfall contributing to the urban hydrodyna… Show more

“…The last decades, floods have caused significant human fatalities [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] and noteworthy financial losses [10,[17][18][19][20]. In Greece, as in the rest of Mediterranean area, a main factor that increases the potential of flood events is the human interventions such as urban sprawl [3,10,[21][22][23][24], a fact that strongly influences the hydraulic characteristics of streams and floodplains [10,25,26].…”

“…These phenomena have caused human fatalities (Barredo, 2007; Diakakis et al, 2019; Faccini, Luino, Paliaga, Sacchini, & Turconi, 2015; Gaume et al, 2009; Gaume et al, 2016; Guzzetti, Stark, & Salvati, 2005; Jonkman & Kelman, 2005; Vinet, Lumbroso, Defossez, & Boissier, 2012), noteworthy economic losses (Barrera, Llasat, & Barriendos, 2006; Boithias et al, 2017; Diakakis et al, 2019; Hooke, 2016; Lara, Saurí, Ribas, & Pavón, 2010) and other significant impacts that are associated with the human socioeconomic activity. In Greece, as in the rest of Mediterranean area, the impact of flash floods has increased, because of the urban sprawl (Angelakis et al, 2020; Diakakis et al, 2019; Faccini et al, 2018; Jodar‐Abellan et al, 2019; Marafuz, Rodrigues, & Gomes, 2015; Myronidis & Ioannou, 2019), which resulted in the significant change of hydraulic characteristics of streams and floodplains (Diakakis et al, 2019; Kastridis & Stathis, 2020; Segura‐Beltrán et al, 2016). Flash floods are highly intense phenomena that occur unexpectedly in a short time period, even in the case that the watershed is considerably covered by forest.…”
