Analysis and Design of Circular Waveguide Polarizers with Elliptical Irises

Abstract: A new design of a polarizer realized in circular waveguide with the insertion of short lengths of guide with elliptical cross-section is introduced. The new structure, that requires a manufacturing by milling techniques only, compares favourably with circular waveguide implementations, since it is composed only by waveguides with separable cross-section, hence producing a definite advantage in electromagnetic modeling. With respect to previously known solutions using square waveguide sections it has the intrin… Show more

“…Different ways of tuning waveguide polarization converters are presented in papers [57][58][59]. In [60] the results of the development of polarizers with elliptical diaphragms are presented, and in [61] a design of diaphragms in the form of grooves in a waveguide is proposed. Different designs of waveguide polarizers with plates that were integrated into the waveguide substrate are considered in [62][63][64][65].…”

“…In large reflector antenna systems for satellite communications main polarization characteristics are determined by the microwave feed network [8]. Typically, it includes a corrugated horn [9][10][11][12][13][14], a waveguide polarization converter [15][16][17][18][19], a 45° waveguide twist [7,8] and a guidebased orthomode duplexer [20][21][22][23][24]. The dimensions of each specified component of a feed must be optimized for the required operating frequency band.…”

“…The problem of ensuring metal contact between pieces in H-plane RWG designs is found repeatedly cited in the literature either explicitly [338], [704], [708]- [712], or implicitly on the results [337], [353], [713]. Under this configuration, continuity of the currents becomes threaten at the joint between the body and the top metal plate.…”
