Analysis and Evaluation of the Theory of Planned Behavior

Abstract: The Theory of Planned Behavior was developed to explain human behaviors. The theory has been broadly applied to health-related behaviors in nursing science but has not been examined in depth based on a critical nursing framework. This article systematically analyzes and evaluates the theory based on Fawcett and DeSanto-Madeya's 2013 framework. The theory reflects nursing metaparadigm concepts and has both social and theoretical significance as well as pragmatic adequacy, and its testability is supported by abu… Show more

“…30,31 In addition, attitude forms the initial intention to conform, which is positively correlated with ISP-compliance as demonstrated in previous research. 32 As TPB is a traditional model that examines factors affecting a nurse's behavior in a broader context, 18 nurses' ISP-compliance, I-competence, and IS-attitudes should be integrated simultaneously into strategy development to improve nurses' IS-behavior toward information security.…”

“…The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is an integrated model that predicts intentions and specific behaviors 16,17 . The Theory of Planned Behavior served as a theoretical framework in studies related to nurses' patient safety behavior and helped explain the motivations and important factors that influence specific behaviors 18–20 . According to TPB, the individual's intention to engage in a specific behavior is the most meaningful determinant of whether that behavior occurs.…”

“…The theory of planned behaviour is described as an intrapersonal and interpersonal theory consisting of five elements: attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, intention and actual behaviour (Ajzen, 1991). It has been shown to effectively promote participatory behaviour, by promoting the knowledge, attitudes, motivation and skills of individuals to further facilitate their engagement in the target behaviour (Lee & Vincent, 2021). In this study, the key components were positive attitude to aging, social support from significant others and communities, self-efficacy and controllability.…”

“…An example of a sample item is “I have control over all the laid‐down safety procedures in this hospital.” With INT, it assessed the nurses' drive to engage in prescribed safety compliance behaviour. An example of a sample item includes “I am willing to follow all the safety protocols in every situation.” The TPB scale usage has reported high reliability in most nursing studies, with their alpha values within the range of 0.64–0.81 (Sueyeon & Catherine, 2021; Via‐Clavero et al, 2019). Obtaining an alpha value of >0.7 on all the TPB scales is consistent with the extent literature, where an alpha score of >0.60 has been recommended as the appropriate threshold to confirm the items' internal reliabilities (Ajzen, 2006; Francis et al, 2004).…”
