Analysis and field test on reactive capability of photovoltaic power plants based on clusters of inverters

Abstract: With the increasing capacity of photovoltaic (PV) power plants connected to power systems, PV plants are often required to have some reactive power control capabilities to participate in reactive power regulation. Reactive power regulation of grid-connected PV inverters can be achieved using different control strategies. In this paper, the reactive power capability of inverters and the technical requirement of PV plants are analyzed. The reactive power capability of a 30 MW PV plant is evaluated against releva… Show more

“…This is recommended to model photovoltaic as either P‐V or P‐Q bus for power flow studies. The following considerations are required for modeling of photovoltaic plant in power flow studies: Only same type of inverter can be connected in parallel. The real power flow in a bus will be MVA photovoltaic plant rating. It can be modeled as a constant power with no reactive power component ( Q ), ie, unity power factor. Some inverters operate such that it allows reactive power control.…”

“…In these circumstances, real time regulations of controllable devices should be applied to remain the voltage of important buses, which consequently also reduce undesirable DG curtailments and load shedding. DGs and energy storage systems (ESSs) have been investigated to achieve real-time voltage regulation in distribution networks [6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. Moreover, in order to increase transfer capacities and DG accommodations, some AC lines can be converted into DC ones and forms a hybrid AC/DC distribution network by connecting existing AC lines through voltage source converters (VSCs) [13].…”
