Analysis and interpretation of acidic nature of aluminosilicates

Abstract: Aluminosilicate solid acid catalysts, especially zeolites, have been widely utilized in petroleum refinery and environmentally benign chemical processes. The acidic property of aluminosilicates has been a subject of advanced studies. Recently an ammonia IRMS-TPD (infrared / mass spectroscopy temperature-programmed desorption) method, an application of operando technique, has been developed to quantify the number and strength distribution of each of Brønsted and Lewis sites on a solid. With an aid of quantum ch… Show more

“…Besides, the desorbed probe molecules can get re-adsorbed while they are coming out of the pores and thus can affect the final results [103]. TPD technique has been upgraded by developing an NH3 IRMS-TPD (infrared/mass spectroscopy TPD) method based on the operando instrumentation setup, which allowed to ascertain the nature of acid sites (Figure 10) [104].…”

“…274 The in situ IR and TPD techniques can also be combined into so called IRMS-TPD providing a deep understanding of the surface processes as well as quantitative information. 275,276 The choice of the probe molecule determines the information possible to obtain similarly to Hammett indicators used to estimate acid strength in non-aqueous media (i.e. in homogeneous catalysis).…”

“…All these techniques have their own advantages and disadvantages, which can be overcome by piecing the information together. An elegant solution from the zeolite world is IRMS-TPD (Infrared mass spectrometry -temperature programmed desorption), [214][215][216][217] which combines many techniques. Here ammonia-doped solid acid materials undergo TPD-MS (temperature programmed desorption -mass spectrometry), whilst the IR spectra is recorded every 10 o C. In doing so one can resolve features due to each distinct active site and quantify the ammonia desorption enthalpy for each.…”
