Analysis and prediction of the gas-liquid interfacial area for droplets impact on solid surfaces

Abstract: Highlights The interfacial areas of droplets during impact on solid surfaces are analysed.  A new correlation for predicting the maximum gas-liquid interfacial area is proposed. The dynamic contact angle with local grid refinement is implemented in the CFD model. The impact of droplets on both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces are studied. The inner flow field of droplets during impact onto a solid surface is described.

“…One of the important factors affecting the dynamic behaviour of droplets is the surface wettability. Generally, droplets tend to adhere to hydrophilic surfaces and rebound from hydrophobic surfaces (Li et al 2017;Liu, Zhang & Min 2019a;Xie et al 2020). Because the forces exerted on various wettability surfaces are different, the use of heterogeneous surfaces can generate richer droplet motion forms, which include droplet splitting using a hydrophilic substrate decorated with hydrophobic patterns and achieving droplet rebound with deflection or gyration by adopting a hydrophobic substrate decorated with hydrophilic patterns (Li et al 2019).…”

“…In recent years, it's popular to develop VOF visual model to achieve SFB visualization [5]. Flow boiling visualization could be achieved by the software ANSYS 19.0, it is employed because liquid and vapor interface are tracked by the volume of fluid (VOF) model with piecewise linear interface calculation PLIC [6].…”

“…Impacting liquid droplets on hydrophobic surfaces finds various applications in areas of heat transfer, coating, fire extinguishing, inkjet printing, fuel injection, metal quenching, self-cleaning, drug delivery, and so on [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. As the texture and chemical properties of the impacting surfaces change, the dynamic characteristics of the droplet alter [ 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
