Analysis Behind Casing: A window for Improved Reservoir Management of Mature Bahrain Oil Field

Abstract: TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractManagement of mature oil fields requires accurate formation evaluation information. The ability to acquire essential data through casing adds a new dimension to reservoir characterization and affects the reservoir development of a mature oilfield like the Bahrain field. New logging tools and technology fill the gap in evaluation, especially for monitoring water saturation changes over time and for detecting bypassed oil pockets across the zone.In this paper w… Show more

“…With measurement accuracy within 10%, error in the interpreted saturation is less than 5% and hence could be used for quantitative estimates. The accuracy is much better for the range of formation resistivities of interest 10 -40 oham-m [1,2,8]. Since the Cased-hole resistivity measurements investigate deeper into the formation and does not suffer from the restrictions of low salinity and porosity they are often advantageous over the hitherto popular time-elapse pulsed neutron techniques for reservoir monitoring.…”

“…However combination of both could be of great use in accurately describing the fluid type as well as lithology. Where Cased Hole Formation Resistivity Tool may not be feasible one would be necessary if the conditions are not favorable to record the other as in the case of a scaled casing [6][7][8][9].…”

“…In other instances the electrodes may make contact with the casing by scratching away the coating, meaning that the CHFR measurement would be unaffected but that corrosion may be induced. Dual casing strings: CHFR is not designed to operate in dual casing strings; the number of variables involved is too complex to enable the formation resistivity to be quantified [17][18][19][20][21].…”
