“…Tunnel excavation mainly refers to the closed-face case, like the open-face conventional tunneling or the shield tunneling (Pan et al, 2017). Conventional tunneling does not exert support pressure on tunnel face, but developing some auxiliary techniques, such as advance injection tubes, shed-pipe grouting, face bolts and umbrella arch system (Ocak et al, 2008;Aksoy et al, 2010;Maidl et al, 2013;Oke et al, 2014;Zhang et al, 2014;Anagnostou et al, 2015;Paternesi et al 2017). These techniques generally improve the face stability by limiting the excessive deformation of the surrounding stratum, or reinforcing the rock or soil mass of the tunnel face.…”

“…The effectiveness of various face support measures in improving tunnel face stability has been studied by several researchers, such as: Lunardi & Bindi, 2000;Kamata & Mashimo, 2003;Anagnostou & Serafeimidis, 2007;Kavvadas & Prountzopoulos, 2007;Juneja et al, 2010;Dias, 2011;Anagnostou & Perazzelli, 2015;Perazzelli & Anagnostou, 2020. Despite these efforts, the design of face support measures still remains largely empirical.…”

“…With respect to closed‐face tunnel boring machine drilling, the shield machine can provide continuous supporting pressure on the tunnel face to ensure its stability. For open‐face New Austrian Tunneling method, the face reinforcement technique with dowels and umbrella pipes has been developed to maintain a safe excavation; the supporting effect of the face reinforcement can be simulated as supporting pressure at the tunnel face . Therefore, it is of highly practical interest to study the face pressure required in tunnel engineering.…”
