Inhibition of water condensation by a soluble salt nucleusA soluble model of gas-liquid condensation is constructed by a quantum-mechanical extension of ~an ~~mpen'~,cl~~~ical a~alys.is. The Ha~iltonian of a system ?f identical particles is separated into a core a~d a tal.l H.amdt?man. Followmg van Kampen, ~e slmu~ate t.he ~ctual core Hamiltonian by an e~ectIve. The resultant free energy agrees with that of Lleb s quantum-mechanical extension of the van der Waals-Max~ell ~heory, without t~e n~cessity of taking the van der Waals limit of a suitably infiniteranged and mfimtely-weak attractive tad. However, the exchange contributions omitted from the model become negligible only in that limit.
