Analysis of a Wide Range of Commercial Exterior Wood Coatings

Abstract: This study was focused on measuring the properties of twenty-three commercially available coatings formulated for exterior wood applications. The coatings were characterized by measuring their surface tension, solid content, viscosity, pH, and glass transition temperatures (Tg). Additionally, the wetting properties of coating droplets on wood substrates were measured. The contact angle of solvent-based and water-based coatings were characterized on untreated southern yellow pine wood samples using high-resolut… Show more

“…Notably, significant surface protection was achieved with surface coverage as low as 0.04–0.15 g m –2 . Considering that application rates of industrially applied systems can be more than 120 g m –2 34 and taking into account the far higher oil contents of commercial wood coatings, 35 this corresponds to a reduction of solids applied by a factor of 10–1000.…”

“…With the continuous improvement of environmental protection regulations and the promotion of low-carbon sustainable development, wood coatings worldwide are targeting the reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). [1][2][3] Aqueous polyurethane dispersion (PUD) coatings, due to their environmental friendliness and excellent overall performance, are widely used in waterborne wood coatings. [4][5][6] Depending on the gloss level of the waterborne wood coatings, there are two types of coatings available in the market: gloss wood lacquer and matte wood lacquer.…”

“…The use of wood in the manufacture of ceilings and columns in the old buildings found in the Erbil Citadel is clear evidence that the use of wood in construction started long ago (Figure 1) [29]. At that time, people already perceived timber as a good construction material with many advantages [30,31]. In the last 10 years, timber has become a building material used just for decoration and thermal and acoustic insulation.…”
