Analysis of an optimal hybrid power system for an off-grid community in Nigeria

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to analyze the effects of variations in annual real interest rates in the assessment of the techno-economic feasibility of a hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) for an off-grid community. Design/methodology/approach Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER) software is used to propose an HRES for Abadam community in northern Nigeria. The HRES was designed to meet the basic needs of the community over a 25-year project lifespan. Based on the available energy resources … Show more

“…Although some studies have assessed the benefits of mini-grid systems on various communities, by far, challenges and successes are choked (Boateng, 2016;Naah and Hamhaber, 2015;Obeng and Kumi, 2014;Shyu, 2013;Obeng and Evers, 2010;Obeng et al, 2008). Therefore, institutional structuressuch as a reduction on the annual real interest rates of renewable off-grid systems (Babatunde et al, 2019) that will protect low-income consumers in rural and remote areas (Zerriffi, 2008) are suggested. Also, there is a need for improved capacity Nexus between the off-grid system for productive use of energy to improve living standards in the long term (Schmidt and Bensch, 2012).…”

“…The micro-grid is described as a small entity of an electricity network with a local supply that can function independently (islanded mode) or in conjunction with the central grid. This can also be stand-alone which is useful for use in remote areas which are isolated from the central grid due to operational barriers such as distance and cost of linking [37]. Islanded operation saves utilities from economic loss as well as improving system reliability and environmental perspective.…”

“…In parallel, the energy demands accelerate in higher rates than global population growth (EIA, 2020) as energy and population are intertwining (Avtar et al , 2019). Thus, to reach the SDG goal for universal access to electricity using clean energy at the lowest cost, the investments and broader adaptation of renewable energy systems for powering various industries, transportations, households, etc., has to be secured (Afful-Dadzie et al , 2020; Morrissey, 2019; Babatunde et al , 2020).…”
