Analysis of antibiotics by capillary electrophoresis

Abstract: The broad category of antibiotics encompasses some of the most widely prescribed pharmaceuticals in the world. As is the case with any pharmaceutical, an antibiotic must be characterized in terms of its potency or activity, and the presence and quantity of impurities. Additionally, any residue or metabolite that may be present as a result of its use must be monitored. Many capillary electrophoretic techniques have been utilized in the analysis of antibiotics, addressing the various aspects of their quantitatio… Show more

“…Several analytical methods for quantitative determination of fluoroquinolones in pharmaceutical formulations are described in scientific literature, like capillary electrophoresis (Bhowal, Das, 1991;Flurer, 1997;Sun, Chen, 1997), UV spectrophotometry (Fratini, Schapoval, 1996;Chowdary, Rao, 1997), titrimetry (Belal, Al-Majed, Al-Obaid, 1999), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (United States Pharmacopeia , 2004;British Pharmacopoeia, 1999;Mazuel, 1991), amongst others.…”

“…Baclofen, a GABA agonist on GABA B receptor, used in spasticity conditions, was detected in nM level with He-Cd laser [85]. The pharmacokinetics of diverse drugs such as, antibiotics, expectorants, anti-inflammatory and analgesics has been quantified and monitored mostly by CE-LIFD [86][87][88][89][90][91]. CE-LIFD has been used for the other type of screening, such as carbohydrates in urine, cancer screening in urine [92,93], even for selective detection of unusual substances as bacterial enterotoxins [94].…”

“…For quinolones, liquid chromatography (LC) is generally used for separation and fluorescence detection is extensively applied to LC because of its good selectivity and sensitivity. 5,6 But thin-layer chromatography (TLC)-fluorescence, 7-9 capillary electrophoresis-fluorescence, 10 highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-UV or photodiode-array 4 have been also used. For NSAID, the methods of double beam UV spectrophotometry, 11 capillary electrophoresis, 12 gas chromatography (GC), 13 electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) 14 and liquid chromatography with UV detection 15,16 have been used widely.…”
