Analysis of antibiotics by CE and their use as chiral selectors: An update

Abstract: The widespread use of antibiotics in medicine and as growth-promoting agents has increased the demand for suitable analytical techniques for their analysis. Analytical methods based on CE or miniaturized CE systems have proved over the years their ability for the analysis of antibiotics. Since our last review (Electrophoresis 2014, 35, 28-49) several new CE methodologies have been reported for antibiotic analysis. This review presents an update of the literature published from June 2013 to June 2015 for the an… Show more

“…Hence, the chiral analysis and stereoisomer separations of peptides, especially peptide pharmaceuticals, are of great importance. Thanks to a high resolution power, speed and low sample and chemicals consumption, CE and CEC methods have become very powerful and popular methods for chiral analysis and stereoisomer separation in general including chiral and stereoselective separations of peptides .…”

“…ILs have unique performance, such as minimal vapor pressure, good thermal and chemical stability, high solubility power, also it can be designed with the composition of anions and cations. ILs have been successfully applied to CE as BGE or coating reagents of the capillary wall . Nevertheless, only few papers have reported the application of chiral ILs in CE for enantioseparation, and most of the chiral ILs were designed based on amino acid .…”

“…CE has proved to be one of the most effective methods for enantiomers' separation due to its high efficiency, robustness, low cost, simplicity, and diversity regarding different modes, such as ACE , MEKC , and NACE . The enantioseparation can be achieved using different types of chiral selectors, such as cyclodextrin and its derivatives , cyclofructans , crown ether , DNA , macrocyclic antibiotics , ionic liquids , chiral metal‐ion complexes , and proteins . However, when using selectors with UV absorbances, such as proteins and DNA, or when the separation is combined with mass spectrometric detection, the bad effects of selectors on detection must be considered.…”
