Analysis of association between TLR-4 Asp299Gly and Thr399Ile gene polymorphisms and chronic periodontitis in a sample of south Indian population

Abstract: Background:To analyze the association between TLR-4 Asp299Gly and Thr399Ile gene polymorphisms and chronic periodontitis in a sample of south Indian population.Materials and Methods:Genomic DNA was obtained from peripheral blood of 60 patients with chronic periodontitis and 60 periodontally healthy subjects. TLR-4 Asp299Gly and Thr399Ile gene polymorphisms were genotyped by a polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism method. The data were analyzed by a χ2-test and by relative risk esti… Show more

“…Also, in the Indian population polymorphic allele Asp299Gly was not identified. In the group of 60 subjects diagnosed with chronic periodontitis there were three heterozygotes and one homozygote for Thr399Ile allele compering to control group (60 participants with clinically healthy periodontium) where there was only one heterozygote for this allele [38]. These observations demonstrate the impossibility to include Asian studies in the meta-analysis on association between TLR4 SNPs occurring in Europe.…”

“…Of the 117 articles reviewed in detail, 58 studies were excluded (18 studies did not publish genotypic frequencies, 13 had no healthy controls in their experimental design, 5 focused on in vitro functional studies, 8 did not study the desired polymorphisms, 6 were either reviews or a meta-analysis, and 8 studies had non extractable data for other reasons). A total of 59 case-control studies [ 29 - 87 ] were included in the analysis, reporting 37 different disease outcomes ( Tables 1 and 2 ). The origin of studies was in descending order Europe (28 studies), Asia (12 studies), South America (7 studies), Africa (6 studies), North America (5 studies), Australia (1 studies).…”

“…38 Ó 2015 Published by Elsevier Inc. on behalf of American Society for Histocompatibility and 39 Immunogenetics. As an infectious disease that affects supporting tissues of the 46 teeth, periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss, particularly 47 in the elderly [1]. According to the significant clinical differences, 48 it can be divided into chronic and the aggressive form [2].…”
