Analysis of Bacteria, Parasites, and Heavy Metals in Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and Rocket Salad (Eruca sativa L.) Irrigated with Treated Effluent from a Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the viability of using treated residuary water from the Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant of Ribeirão Preto to grow vegetables, through the characterization and quantification of parasites, coliforms, and heavy metals. Three equal cultivation areas were prepared. The first was irrigated with treated/chlorinated (0.2 mg L(-1)) wastewater, the second one with treated wastewater without chlorination, and the third site with potable water, which was the control group. The presence … Show more

“…The level of microbial contamination observed in recycled wastewater, soils, and crops depends on technical regulations based on national standards. In this context, posttreatment disinfection processes such as chlorination, ozonation, and UV radiation, shown to be successful treatments against microbial agents and pharmaceutical ingredients, can significantly reduce the risks associated with TWW irrigation (Hey et al 2012;Martinez et al 2011;Nikaido et al 2010;Bernstein et al 2008;An et al 2007).…”

“…Generally, the release of raw sewage into rivers causes environmental degradation by the spread of disease and the impairment of water quality, which may then become unfit for certain uses [2,3]. The composition of the sewage sludge depends mainly on the origin of the residues treated: domestic or industrial activities [3,4]. Among the chemical components, carbohydrates, oils, pesticides, phenols, proteins, surfactants, and volatile organic compounds constitute the organic matter, while alkali compounds, chlorides, heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphates, and sulfides are notable inorganic components.…”

“…The samples passed through the digestion process by Method 3005A of the Environmental Protection Agency for the analysis of metals (USEPA, 1992;Nikaido et al, 2010). Fifty mL aliquots of a water sample tube were added to the digester block to which was added 2 mL of HNO 3 and 5 mL of HCl.…”

“…Among the various chemical contaminants, the study of heavy metals has been considered a priority in health promotion programs worldwide (Nikaido et al, 2010). According to Baird (2002), the term "heavy metal" refers to a class of chemical elements; many of them are harmful to humans.…”
