Analysis of body composition among children and adolescents – a cross-sectional study of the Polish population and comparison of body fat measurement methods

Abstract: The percent of youths classified as overweight and obese has increased in Krakow (Poland). Calculation of body fat percent derived from bioimpedance provides better estimates than the use of Slaughter equations, which tended to overestimates the values.

“…For the NHANES data set, Tanner stage was not collected, but is required for estimating body composition in males using the equation of Slaughter. Consistent with another publication (Golec et al, 2014), males were categorised as prepubertal for age<12 years, peripubertal for ages 12 to 14 years, and pubertal for age>14 years.…”

“…However, most studies included only adolescents [20][21][22], and the body composition was evaluated by one skinfold thickness measurement at the triceps [22] or the sum of two skinfold thickness measurements at the triceps and subscapularis or at the triceps and calf [8,20,21]. Underestimation or overestimation of fat mass by skinfold equations has been shown in other studies with the different populations, independent of nutritional studies [34][35][36]. In this context, it is important to evaluate the body composition by accurate methods such as multifrequency bioimpedance.…”

“…It concerns both the frequency of eating selected meals, the lack of certain foods conducive to health in the daily diet (vegetables) and their replacement with health-threatening products (fast food). Own research and other authors’ ones (Woźniacka et al , 2018, Kowal et al , 2016, Tomaszewski et al , 2015, Golec et al , 2014, Rodziewicz-Gruhn and Połacik, 2013; Wojciechów-Gazel et al , 2013; Wronka et al , 2007; Suliga 2004; Wronka and Chmara-Pawlińska, 2004; Kowalski 2003; Mięsowicz and Palus, 2002) indicate that young people are one of the social groups whose nutrition method raises many objections in terms of both quantity and quality. This is particularly evident among students living outside their family homes.…”
