Analysis of clinicopathological factors associated with bone metastasis in breast cancer

Abstract: Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women today. Once breast cancer metastasizes to bone, mortality increases. Thus, there is an urgent need to identify patients with high risk of bone metastasis, and to find predictive factors for the occurrence of bone metastasis at an earlier stage of breast cancer. Three hundred and sixty patients with pathologically proved breast cancer visiting the Department of Nuclear Medicine for whole body bone scan from January 2006 and January 2009 were inv… Show more

“…65 Consequently, initial staging and regular follow-up evaluations for restaging are critical to improving quality of life and survival. 64,66,67 Whole body (WB) bone scanning is a relatively inexpensive and non-invasive examination that is recommended for accurate staging of disease burden and follow-up evaluation in symptomatic or high-risk patients. 65,68 WB bone scanning by means of planar, SPECT, and/or SPECT/CT is a powerful first-line staging and treatment response tool.…”

“…At present, breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in females, and the bone metastasis of breast cancer has a direct effect on patient prognosis, which results in a marked increase in the mortality rate (1). The molecular mechanisms of metastasis remain unclear, as the factors involved in the metastatic process are complicated.…”
