Biopharmaceutical industries have advanced significantly after the millennium. Novel biopharmaceuticals have been developed one after another, and blockbuster drugs have been produced. Accompanying the increase in the demand for biopharmaceuticals, a business model called “contract development manufacturing organization (CDMO)” has emerged. A CDMO is entrusted with the development and manufacturing of production processes from pharmaceutical companies. In this review, we identify the success factors of the biopharmaceutical CDMO by analyzing the foundry business for the semiconductor industry. Furthermore, we also review monoclonal antibody production platforms and new technologies that are critical aspects of differentiation strategies in the biopharmaceutical CDMO.

Since the invention of the transistor in 1947, semiconductors have seen phenomenal development in accordance with Moore's Law1), which is based on Dennard's theory2) on scaling. More than 30 years have passed since the advent of CMP3), the "most amazing technology that has contributed most to Moore’s law” according to Dr. Moore. Beginning with the CMP life cycle, this paper looks back on the history of CMP development, recognizes the current situation, and overlooks the future of polishing, cleaning, and monitoring. The paper also introduces the evolution of CMP, a revolutionary technology that emerged in the 1980s, together with some trivia from that period, and further introduces some episodes that are already or will be handed down as legends. In preparation for the paradigm revolution of semiconductors that is expected to occur in 2030, CMP software, as well as hardware, needs to advance more dramatically than before.

We examine the relationship between application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) firms' technology portfolios and their innovative performance. This relationship is complex, and we hypothesize that it changes according to the stage of ASIC technology evolution. We test our hypotheses using a longitudinal dataset of 67 firms from the ASIC industry over the period 1986-2003. We find that ASIC technology evolution negatively moderates the effects of the size and diversity of the internal technology portfolio on ASIC firms' innovative performance. This implies that, in earlier phases of ASIC technology evolution, successful ASIC firms developed large and diverse portfolios to cope with technological uncertainty. During later phases of ASIC technology evolution, they tend to have relatively smaller and less diverse portfolios, and they focus on unique, protectable, and exploitable advantages.
