Analysis of concrete columns with high-performance concrete jackets and polymer wraps

Abstract: Cross-sectional analyses of circular and square reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with reactive powder concrete jacketing and fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapping were undertaken. The stress block method was used to determine theoretical axial load–bending moment (AL–BM) interactions of the columns. These were then compared with experimental results and found to be in very good agreement. A parametric study was also undertaken to investigate the most important factors that influence the AL–BM ca… Show more

“…Few studies reported in the literature were ever devoted to the theoretical investigation of the interaction efficacy of bending moment and axial force in RC columns strengthened with UHPFRC. One of the most comprehensive studies to obtain theoretical equations was the one due to Algburi et al 45 These authors, indeed, extended the equations capturing the interaction efficacy of bending moment and axial force in RC columns retrofitted via UHPFRC and FRP under eccentric loads. The final axial load in such columns is expressed by Equation () below. “…Assuming that the tensile strength provided by ordinary concrete and UHPFRC may be ignored and that strain is linear, Algburi et al 45 captured the compressive force provided by ordinary concrete and the UHPFRC jacket as in Equations () and (), respectively, where the values for ∝ 20 and ∝ 2 j are calculated using Equations () and () 46 Cc0goodbreak=α200.25emfitaliccc00.25emA0 Ccjgoodbreak=α2j0.25emfccj0.25em()Ajgoodbreak−Aj0 2jgoodbreak=1goodbreak−0.0030.25emfccj2.25em0.67200.85 20goodbreak=1goodbreak−0.0030.25emfcc02.25em0.67200.85 …”

“…During the construction of a new masonry building or repairing old heritage structures, while using cement as a main binder in the concrete or repair material respectively, several consequences beyond the technical aspects have to be attended in this modern era. Recently, several modern techniques such as fiber reinforced jacketing [20], usage of steel threaded rods [21] are adopted for repairing the existing structures, repair in the case of ancient and historic structures need traditional based materials. Despite of these demerits associated with cement; researchers have shown attention to the lime material which is considered to be advantageous than cement.…”
