Analysis of contextual-related variables on serve and receiving performances in elite men’s and women’s table tennis players

Abstract: The goal of the study was to identify the serve and reception effectiveness in relation to selected contextual-related variables in elite table tennis players. The sample comprised 140 matches from the men's and women's 2016 Olympic Games Tournament (N = 70, respectively). The contextual-related variables considered were: quality of opposition; the dominant hand of the players; match and set duration; biggest lead; most consecutive points in each set; deficit overcome; and previous set outcome. Bivariate corre… Show more

“…In particular, only two specific contexts during men's matches (clusters 5 and 6) and only one context during women's matches (cluster 2) were significant. These findings highlight the importance of controlling for contextual variables as these have the potential to modify time-related factors of long rallies during men´s (balanced and losing score-lines during both intervals in regular and long matches) and women´s (interval of 11 to 21 points when losing and playing long matches) matches [10,13]. Further, this indirectly demonstrates the importance of simulating specific match scenarios in practice or creating certain scenarios within a match (e.g., forcing opponent's errors after a stressful/long rally).…”

“…In addition, as contextual variables have a direct impact on player´s performances in racket sports [13], the current analyses controlled for total match duration, the influence of match set (1 st , 2 nd or 3 rd ), set interval (before and after the regular time-out within each set), and scoreline (point differences). These contextual variables from all matches were established as part of Stage 3 with clustering procedures run (two-step cluster analysis) to classify and redefine the variables of match type and score-line [13]. Further, the total match duration (minutes) was examined and classified matches into long and regular ones (see Table 1).…”

“…This study recognised that multiple factors contribute to the effectiveness of both the serve and ROS and highlighted the fact that the coupling of these two “most important shots” leads to different strategies employed for both. Gómez et al (2017) suggested that psychological factors, such as confidence and momentum, are likely to affect performance during a match, accounting for their finding that table tennis serving performance tended to fluctuate throughout the 140 men’s and women’s matches analyzed from the 2016 Olympic games.…”

“…Setiap permainan net pada saat memulai pertandingan dimulai dengan serve, setiap reli dimulai dengan serve, karenanya, serve mewakili titik awal dari interaksi dinamis antara kedua lawan dan dapat mengganggu sistem dan menciptakan keuntungan bagi server selama konfrontasi (Gómez et al, 2017). Dalam siaran pers barubaru ini, Bialik (2016) menunjukkan keunggulan rata-rata untuk tim/pemain saat bermain di olahraga net Olimpiade.…”
