We propose a novel seismic tomography method, Source Side Seismic Tomography (3STomo), which is designed particularly to image the subsurface structure beneath seismically active regions. Unlike the teleseismic tomography, in which the data are relative traveltime residuals between closely spaced stations for each teleseismic event, 3STomo uses relative traveltime shifts between earthquakes within the study region for each distant station. Given the relatively evener distribution of global seismic stations, this method has unique advantages for imaging the structure beneath regions that have numerous earthquakes but lack of dense seismic stations, for example, some subduction zones and spreading ridges in the ocean. In addition, 3STomo has potentially better vertical resolution at shallow depths than the traditional teleseismic tomography. The effect of the inaccurate source parameters on its resolution can be minimized by using depth phases and the technique of joint source and structure inversion. Numerical experiments and application to Luzon Island, Philippines show that 3STomo can be a valuable tool to investigate the subsurface structure beneath some areas where the traditional method cannot be applied to, or at least it can be used as a complementary component of conventional teleseismic tomography to obtain better back-azimuth coverage and achieve higher resolution at shallow depths in the inversion.

S U M M A R YWe conducted detailed analyses of a global array of trenches, revealing systematic intra-and intertrench variations in plate bending characteristics. The intratrench variations of the Manila and Mariana Trenches were analysed in detail as end-member cases of the relatively young (16-36 Ma) and old (140-160 Ma) subducting plates, respectively. Meanwhile, the intertrench variability was investigated for a global array of additional trenches including the Philippine, Kuril, Japan, Izu-Bonin, Aleutian, Tonga-Kermadec, Middle America, Peru, Chile, Sumatra and Java Trenches. Results of the analysis show that the trench relief (W 0 ) and width (X 0 ) of all systems are controlled primarily by the faulting-reduced elastic thickness near the trench axis (T m e ) and affected only slightly by the initial unfaulted thickness (T M e ) of the incoming plate. The reduction in T e has caused significant deepening and narrowing of trench valleys. For the cases of relatively young or old plates, the plate age could be a dominant factor in controlling the trench bending shape, regardless the variations in axial loadings. Our calculations also show that the axial loading and stresses of old subducting plates can vary significantly along the trench axis. In contrast, the young subducting plates show much smaller values and variations in axial loading and stresses.

Features resulting from the interplay of arc magmatism, ophiolite accretion, ocean basin closure and other subsequent tectonic processes are preserved in the Philippine island arc system. Subduction of ocean floor along the trenches surrounding the Philippines is a major factor in shaping the geologic history of this island arc system. Stress-strain relationships, as manifest in both the regional and local setting of the archipelago, are derived from the interaction of at least four major plates: Sundaland, Philippine Mobile Belt, Philippine Sea and, to a certain extent, the Indo-Australian plate. Collision zones in this island arc system are characterized by the involvement of oceanic bathymetric highs (seamounts, spreading ridge, submerged continental fragment). A major strike-slip fault, the Philippine Fault Zone, with compressional and extensional components, traverses the whole archipelago where all excess stress not accommodated by the surrounding trenches is taken up. Tholeiitic through adakitic to calc-alkaline rock suites characterize the different magmatic arcs. Exposed oceanic lithospheric fragments exhibit transitional mid-ocean ridge, back arc basin to island arc geochemical characteristics. The observed crustal thickness in the Philippines resulted from combined magmatic (volcanism) and amagmatic (ophiolite accretion) processes, with the former being the dominant factor.
